History of Thalassotherapy

I am well familiar with the term 'Thalassotherapy' but really couldn't describe what it was so this is what I found out...

Thalassotherapy has been around for centuries.  Also known as Seaweed therapy or Algae therapy.  The amazing properties of seaweed have been used around the globe by humans for thousands of years.  For some reason although big in Europe and Asia Thalassotherapy really hasn't caught on in Ameica.

The principal behind thalassotherapy is that repeated exposure to sea air and immersion in warm seawater, mud, clay and protein-rich algae helps restore the body's natural chemical balance. Apparently seawater and human plasma are very similar.  When immersed in warm sea water the body absorbs the minerals it needs through the skin.  Seaweed Therapy (or Thalassotherapy) is very popular with Arthritis, Osteo-arthritis and Rheumatoid sufferers, people with Eczema and Psoriasis, hard working manual labourers, gardeners, craftsmen and women with stiff sore muscles and joints. All these will benefit from seaweed therapy.

Seaweed baths will help you sleep so it's great for people with poor sleeping patterns and insomnia.  The beauty benefits are amazing as the antioxidant, anti-aging and moisturising properties improve the skin.  This is right up on my wish list !!

Apparently the ancient Greeks used seaweed for many healing benefits and held seaweed therapy - with a combination of seaweed and sea water baths -   in high regard.

Most amazing, seaweed has the ability to remove radioactive strontium and other heavy metals from our bodies, implying a benefit to people who have had exposure to radiotherapy or chemical intervention.

Seaweed is rich in iodine and helps to balance the thyroid and significantly acts as an anti-inflammatory, reducing painful swollen joints.  Seaweed is a natural anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antioxidant and also contains antiseptic properties.

I have heard that many types of seaweed are edible and have found out that they contain more protein than meat, more calcium than milk and contain many important vitamins including anti-stress B vitiamins, Vitamin K and important minerals and are rich in magnesium and manganese.
